Stem cells are known for their great potential in modern cellular therapies. In the transition from research & development to clinical studies or production, the demand for the number of cells increases dramatically. The generation of the required cell quantities is strongly supported by suspension cultures compared to conventional two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cultures. Together with Felix Manstein from Robert Zweigerdt´s group at Hannover Medical School, we will offer insights into strategies on how to transfer a process performed in a 2D culture method into a cell-based suspension culture. To this end, we will discuss the importance of monitoring and controlling key parameters for optimized stem cell cultivation in stirred-tank bioreactor control systems.
