Eppendorf Moments

  • Floriana Dec 03, 2020

When I was 16, my science teacher at high school organized a "biotechnology course" to make student passionate of biology application in the lab. This included lessons and also practical sessions for all the participants.

One of these lessons was focused on our own DNA extraction from our mouths.

We followed for the first time a "long" scientific protocol, using Eppendorf tubes, micropipettes, and of course small volumes.

At the end we collected a long, cloudy shaped DNA that we brought home.

I still have that lovely Eppendorf tube in my room at my parent's house.

I can now admit that that experience made me fall in love with science and now I am still fascinated even if these things are now my routine.

While working as a laboratory technician I was tasked with screening thousands of compounds from an experimental library. I was quickly frustrated by multichannel pipettes that did not eject, were inaccurate, and overall a huge headache. Luckily for me, we ordered new Eppendorf research plus multichannel pipettes for the lab. What a difference they made! These pipettes improved my job considerably and I can't imagine working with any other brand ever again.

As a undergraduate working in teaching labs the name Eppendorf was always associated with the best. After graduating and working in a professional lab the name Eppendorf has stayed the same. Working long nights processing samples to setting up drug assays Eppendorf pipettes and microcentrifuge tubes have always followed. My Eppendorf moment is the consistency and quality the brand always provides!

I started my postdoc one late summer day,

With fly brains and confocal images I would often play.

One day I was provided with a new eppendorf set,

The smoothest pipettes I had ever met.

A golden age of molecular success,

They drastically helped my research progress.

One day I was forced to leave them behind,

I moved on to my new job which is to mold young minds.

Now being without my pipettes I miss them dearly,

My research efficiency has suffered severely.

Hopefully someday I will meet these fantastic pipettes again,

I suppose I will have to wait until then.

This is more of a "I will never take for granted my epindorf centrifuges ever again" story. I was performing DNA extractions, like I have done many times before using our trustworthy eppendorf centrifuges. Our little eppendorf tube tool holder guy sits right above them! Well, this particular time I was extracting DNA from swabs and for some reason there was no centrifuge protocol for this particular kit we were using in the lab, only vacuum! It was after I hooked the columns up to the vacuum did I realize that I never wanted to perform vacuum filtered dna extractions again if I can avoid it. Only going for protocols that allow me to use my centrifuge from now on!

Ever since working in a lab my freshman year of college at University of New Hampshire, I always saw grad students with Eppendorf pens. I always wanted one, and wondered where anyone got them, and there was no info online. After graduating, working for two years in research, and moving to industry, I got my first pen on my first day of work this year!! I love it and use it everyday. Hopefully I can get another before this one runs out of ink!!

My lab group is the only group in our department that collects epPoints (and I have taken on the big burden of providing Eppendorf jelly sweets to the group). So every 'cardboard collection' day, I run round the department, hunting down QR codes on discarded boxes.

This year, I started doing my master's thesis. During the practical classes, we were used to have old pipettes, where you had to push with both hands to eject the tip. But when I arrived in my thesis' lab, I discovered and used an Eppendorf pipette for the first time!! What a shock when I realised pipetting could be so easy! I took me some time to get used to the fact that the tip can get ejected by pushing a little harder but it is so much easier! And don't even get me started ont the Eppendorf multichannel pipette...

When I started my PHD, I received my first set of eppendorf research plus pipettes (an upgrade from my old ones). Ever since then, pipetting has never been easier (or maybe even enjoyable)!.

My first job working in a lab was as a lab assistant. Not trusting the new employees I was given a run down pair of pipettes to start with. I’ll never forget the day that I was given a fresh pair of eppendorf pipettes and what a difference they made! The dials glide like butter and the plunger is oh so satisfying and smooth. The clear choice is eppendorf!
