The project activities in the target areas are implemented by partner organizations, with whom the charity has in many cases worked successfully for many years. The work of GEO schützt den Regenwald e.V. is funded by donations. Donations are only used to fund local projects. Geo schützt den Regenwald e.V. observes the guidelines of Deutsche Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen (German Central Institute for Social Issues). The annual financial statements are published annually in the charity’s newsletter; the financial reports are checked regularly by external auditors.

The project currently supported by Eppendorf: Reforestation and income generation in Cuellaje, Ecuador

In the Cuellaje district, GEO schützt den Regenwald e.V. is committed to the reforestation of communal and private areas and the generation of additional income for the local population.

Background Information

Ecuador has one of the highest deforestation rates in the whole of South America. Clearing, slashing and burning, road construction works, housing development and copper mining pose a serious threat to the remnants of the once extensive mountain cloud forest in northwestern Ecuador. This type of forest accounts for only 2.5 percent of tropical rainforests, but has an impressively high degree of biodiversity.

Project Objectives

Supporting the local efforts for protecting the mountain cloud forest in the Cuellaje district and preserving the ecological function of the forest.

Activities

    • Reactivation of the tree nursery group and tree nursery in San Joaquín, Cuellaje
    • Establishing a new tree nursery group in El Rosario, Cuellaje
    • Training and continuing education measures for the tree nursery groups: tree production, grafting of fruit trees etc.
    • Production of 30,000 tree seedlings of a large variety of species:
      (i) 5,000 trees for the Cuellaje forest reserve: exclusively native and endangered species such as cedro tree and carnauba palm
(ii) for private areas: 6,000 trees: native species such as dragon tree, fern trees, 4,000 useful trees, including alder trees, and 15,000 fruit trees: 5,000 coffee, 10,000 avocado, citrus fruits etc.
