Nearly all applications have at least one or several steps where samples need to be mixed or incubated at a certain temperature. Larger volumes are generally handled by larger shaker instruments whereas smaller samples as those that have DNA, RNA, or proteins are mixed by smaller benchtop temperature-controlled mixers.
