Eppendorf RackScan

Product Information

Scanning more than one sample in parallel?

Boost your efficiency with Eppendorf RackScan! The more samples you have, the less you want to scan your vials for cryostorage manually. The Eppendorf RackScan solves this common issue, being able to read storage racks with up to 96 different barcoded vials from the bottom. The RackScan Analyzer software transfers the coded sample IDs to downstream databases. The CryoStorage vial is stored in the ULT freezer.

Trying to encode your vessel label?

»Stored vessels must be labeled« – something every lab member agrees on. In reality, you always find some vessels in your freezer without any labeling or with non-readable labeling. Clear labeling is recommended to make reading as easy and as reliable as possible for everyone. Printed labels on vessels in plain writing are the minimum condition for safe reading. The barcode is one step further towards fast and safe sample identification.
A barcode is an optical representation of data which is machine-readable.

How does the Eppendorf RackScan work?

Eppendorf RackScan is designed to read 2D-coded tubes in SBS racks and cryostorage boxes. The instrument is equipped with the scanner-related software, RackScan Analyzer, that can rapidly read and decode 2D barcodes on up to 96 cryogenic sample vials within a rack.

As all Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials have a 2D datamatrix code at the bottom of the vial, they can be scanned by the RackScan. The available volumes of Eppendorf Cryostorage Vials range from 0.5 to 4.0 mL.

      What are 2D barcodes?

A barcode is an optical representation of data, which is machine-readable. Classic 1D barcodes code data by varying the width of the parallel lines as well as their spacings. Two-dimensional codes (2D) are based on dots, hexagons, rectangles, or other geometric patterns. These codes are also called datamatrix codes.

2D codes are based on the following specifications:
      • Finder pattern consists of two constant lines at left and bottom, "clock track"
      • The quiet zone surrounds the finder pattern, it should be free of any black-white contrast
      • The code can be white on black background or black on white background

What if you're using side-labeled barcodes?

Some vessels are labeled at the side of the tube, and freezer storage boxes or cyro tube racks can also have their own barcode positioned on the side. To accommodate these labeling formats, the Eppendorf RackScan "s" accessory is available – a convenient side-arm that easily attaches to the main unit for seamless integration.

Tired of transferring sample data between different software tools?

Data transfer between different software packages can be nerve-racking as compatibilities are not always given. You can ease your nerves with the RackScan Analyzer software, which reads the barcodes of your vials and provides the information to downstream applications. This can be manually imported into local databases or automatically imported into the eLabInventory software of SciSure.

      Paperwork required?

For certification purposes, more and more users need to document every piece of information. As vials are a major part of lab workflows, information about Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials like lot number, order number, certificates etc. are available via the Eppendorf website, based on the vial code. The information can be exported manually into local databases or even automatically transferred via RackScan to the sample management software eLabInventory or eLabJournal (software add-on) of SciSure.

      Annoyed by uncomfortable sample handling?

When you think of ergonomics, you should think far beyond the »ergonomically designed chair«. Eppendorf started to optimize the ergonomics of laboratory devices back in the early 1970s.
In 2003, we started the PhysioCare Concept, focusing on ergonomic liquid handling devices like our pipettes.
Nowadays, the Eppendorf PhysioCare Concept has broadened to include further laboratory products, developing a holistic solution to harmonize the workflows in your laboratory with your health and well-being. For example, with the Eppendorf RackScan, you can experience:
      • Plug & Read for easy installation of scanner
      • Compact and light design for convenient re-location of instrument
      • Comfortable and fast rack fixation on scanner

      Lost in samples? Stay organized!

Over many years, you collect hundreds and thousands of samples – samples that are the results of years of hard work – samples of high value. When storing these, it is vital to keep them safe and accessible.
Many scientists still use spreadsheets or even paper-based lists to keep track of their storage. While these solutions may work most of the time, they are susceptible to human error, damage, and misplacement. Keep track of your samples with eLabInventory, a sample management software.
