The SafeCode enables unambiguous identification of the sample. It encodes a number assigned by Eppendorf, which is unique for each Eppendorf Consumable. On the other hand, via the Eppendorf Website or with the help of eLabInventory/eLabJournal, the sample identification can be digitally supplemented by consumable information (e.g. quality certificate, purity, volume, article number). But, the SafeCode is more than just a data matrix code with ECC200 error correction. It also provides the ability to easily and document the used vessel completely digitaly.

What is data matrix code?

A data matrix code is a 2D barcode. It is a picture of dates and symbols. Data in a Datamatrix code is machine-readable using optical readers, such as camera scanners, and processed electronically.

How can it be determined that a code has not been awarded twice?

Eppendorf guarantees that all SafeCode IDs are only used once for Eppendorf products across all products. As the SafeCode ID consists of two letters and ten (microtubes, conicals and plates) or eight digits (cryostorage vials), chances are extremely low (1:2.7e10 and 1:2.7e8 respectively) anyways to receive the same ID twice.

What kind of devices and software is needed to use the SafeCode system?

To read and process the SafeCode system, a Datamatrix code compatible reader and GS1-128 compliant software is needed. Optimum use is ensured by the RackScan b and RackScan s, as well as eLAB Inventory.

Which information is encoded in the data matrix code and the barcode on Eppendorf SafeCode consumables?

Eppendorf SafeCode consumables—including plates, tubes, conical tubes, and CryoStorage Vials—are pre-labeled with a 2D data matrix code to ensure easy and reliable identification. Additionally, plates and CryoStorage Vials are equipped with a 1D linear barcode for additional flexibility. Both the 2D data matrix code and the 1D barcode contain the same unique information, the SafeCode ID. We guarantee the uniqueness of this ID across all Eppendorf consumables. For tubes, plates, and conical tubes, the SafeCode ID consists of 2 letters followed by 10 digits. For CryoStorage Vials, the SafeCode ID consists of 2 letters followed by 8 digits. The SafeCode ID is also printed in plain text on each consumable for clear and readable identification. Additional details: The 2D data matrix code provides ECC200 error correction. The 1D barcode uses the Code 128 format.

Is it possible to store samples in Eppendorf SafeCode consumables in the freezer?

Yes, the SafeCode consumables (SnapCap tubes, concial tubes, plates and CryoVials) can be stored down to -86 °C.

What is the Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials intended use?

The CryoStorage Vials can be used in routine and research laboratories in the life sciences, industrial, or chemical sectors. They may however be used for research purposes only. The products are not intended for use in diagnostic or therapeutic applications.

What types of applications can be carried out with Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials?

Sample storage of biological samples (microorganisms, virus, nucleic acids, tissue, antibodies, hybridomas, blood, serum, sperm, eggs, embryos, saliva, mammalian cells including stem cells, protein, cell lysates, plant cells, urine) and chemical compounds.

From which materials are the Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials made?

All parts of the CryoStorage Vials that is in direct contact with sample are manufactured from polypropylene of highest purity and quality. The polypropylene used contains no plasticizers and complies with FDA requirements for the use of food grade plastics. No metal-based dyes are used. The outer black parts of the CryoStorage Vials as well as the CryoStorage Racks are made from partially recycled polymers of the original materials to minimize environmental impact of plastics.

No, Eppendorf do not use or intentionally incorporate slip agents, biocides, plasticizers into the materials that are used for the production of the CryoStorage Vials.

Is it possible to store samples in Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials in liquid nitrogen?

Yes, the CryoStorage Vials can be used in the gas phase above liquid nitrogen, i.e. from -196°C to +121°C.

Which purity grades are available for the Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials?

The CryoStorage Vials are certified as "free of detectable RNase, DNase, human DNA and endotoxin". Additionally, there is also the "Sterile" quality vials, which are certified SAL 10-6.

Is it necessary to buy new equipment to be able to use the new CryoStorage Vials?

Are the Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials suitable for safe use in the food industry?

No, our CryoStorage Vials are not certified for use in the food industry.

Are the Eppendorf CryoStorage Vials antistatic?

Our vessels are not produced with antistatic material, i.e. they are basically not antistatic. It should be noted that the use of antistatic agents during production would reduce or prevent the wettability of the vessels.

For what applications are SafeCode consumables suitable for?

They can be used as usual consumables in any application they are normally used. In addition to that, the SafeCode consumables offer enormous benefits when fully digital sample tracking and information archiving is required, as they are pre-labeled barcoded vessels with 2-level-coding (tubes, and conceals) or 3-level-coding (CryoStorage Vials and plates) in different formats. These enable you to improve your processes, by allowing to download all relevant, ID-specific documentation for your vessel (certificates, technical drawings, lot numbers, and supplier order numbers) using the Eppendorf DataPort on the Eppendorf website and allows you to manage your coded samples with sample management software like eLabInventory.

What is SafeCode and what information does it encode?

The SafeCode is a pre-labelled and durable coding on consumables (data matrix code and clear coding). The SafeCode ID is a serial number issued by Eppendorf that is unique to every Eppendorf SafeCode Consumable. This facilitates a precise tracing of samples in the laboratory. Additionally, this ID links all the relevant product data and product specific documents, such as lot number, technical data and certification of conformity. This data can be accessed via the Eppendorf dataport on the Eppendorf website.

Is it necessary to buy new equipment to be able to use Eppendorf SafeCode consumables?

The SafeCode data matrix code can be read with hand-held scanners (smartphones app may also be possible). The hand-held scanner ultimately functions like a keyboard and can be connected to every computer in the same way. Alternatively, the user can read the clear-text code manually and thus no additional equipment is necessary. Correspondingly, entries in LIMS or ELN software like eLabNext can be made via a scanner for the 2D (or 1D for plates) code, but also via the keyboard for the human readable code.

Are Eppendorf SafeCode consumables autoclavable?

SafeCode Consumables are not suitable for autoclaving. Where applicable it´s recommended to select a pre-sterilized option (of conical tubes, cryostorage vials).

Are SafeCode labels resistant to chemicals?

SafeCode consumables have same resistance as the standard consumables (without the SafeCode) please refer to the respective Application Note 056 or Instructions of Use for more details.

What are 1D and 2D barcodes?

A barcode is an optical representation of data, which is machine-readable. Classic 1D barcodes code data by varying the width of the parallel lines as well as their spacings. Two-dimensional codes (2D) are based on dots, hexagons, rectangles, or other geometric patterns. These codes are also called data matrix codes.
2D codes are based on the following specifications:
• Finder pattern consists of two constant lines at left and bottom, "clock track"
• The quiet zone surrounds the finder pattern, it should be free of any black-white contrast
• The code can be white on black background or black on white background

What is 3-level coding, and how can this improve sample identification?

• Clear coding (side)

Experience fast cap fastening and removal

Time in the lab is limited – you always try to be as fast as possible. You open and close tubes with your left hand while you already adapt the pipette to the correct volume with your right hand.
The twistlock bottom of the vial prevents it from rotating within the rack when being opened for easy and even automated capping and decapping of screw caps.

Reliable documentation and data integration

For certification purposes, more and more users need to document every piece of information.
