I am looking into buying a new ULT freezer but I do not know if I should buy an upright or chest model?

Eppendorf sells both upright as well as chest model freezers. The key features to consider for your purchase are availability of space and ease of access. Upright freezers have a lower footprint than chest models and it is easier to access samples more frequently. Whereas the chest models offer more capacity at a higher footprint, making them ideal for long term storage with higher temperature uniformity.

What is the difference between 120V, 60 Hz and 208/220V, 60 Hz?

Both are available in the US and in general 120V is considered as the household voltage and 208/230V is considered as the industrial voltage. 120 V has a slightly higher power consumption due to the lower voltage. There is no difference in the power consumption or performance between the 208 V and 230 V. Depending on the power receptacle you currently use at the planned location for the freezer, please be sure to select the correct power cable. We recommend a dedicated circuit for each freezer.

Why is a lockable switch plate needed?

The lockable switch plate protects the device from being switched on off accidentally. A separate battery circle can be switched off during transport.

What does "warm up time" mean?

This is the time required for a unit to warm up in case of a power or system failure from -80°C to 0°C. This usually takes more then 20 hours for the smallest Eppendorf freezer F101h and around 40 h for Eppendorf CryoCubes with 2/3 filling. The warm up data for all Eppendorf freezers can be requested at local Sales office .

What is Vacuum panel technology?

Vacuum insulation panels are used in Eppendorf Innova, HEF (high efficiency) and most CryoCube freezers for maximum storage and maximum energy savings by providing more effective thermal insulation than traditional foams.

What is the function of an auto vent port ?

When freezer door is opened ambient air rushes into the freezer. When the door is closed, this air is compressed and a vacuum is created. Eppendorf freezers are equipped with an auto vent port on the left hand or integrated in the front panel (CryoCube) to equalize the pressure. This operates automatically but can be used manually by pressing the button in addition for quicker access.

How do I defrost my Eppendorf – 86 °C ULT freezer?

After extended period operation, defrosting may become necessary. Please refer to your Eppendorf freezer manual for step by step direction on how to defrost the unit.

What does a CO 2 or LN 2 Backup System provide?

The Backup Systems are independent systems which provide protection of samples in case of a power or unit failure by injecting liquid LN2 or CO 2 into the unit. It is controlled by an independent temperature sensor. Carbon dioxide systems will maintain temperatures between -40 °C and -70 °C for a period of up to 48 hours. Liquid nitrogen back-up systems will maintain the freezer temperature at -86 °C for few hours. CO 2 and LN2 systems can be retrofitted by the Service.

Can I connect the freezer to my building management system (BMS)?

All Eppendorf freezers are provided with an alarm monitoring socket at the rear of the freezer and a matching plug. The device can be connected to a central monitoring system (building management system) for freezer alarm monitoring. Eppendorf also offers an independent chart recorder.

Which options are available for the new Eppendorf CryoCube F740 series?

All CryoCube F740 types are available as left hand or right hand option. A 3 or 5 compartment version is offered but each version has 3 inner doors.

What is the material of the inner chamber?

All Eppendorf ULT Freezer provide stainless steel chambers without rust build up, scratches and easy cleanability.

What are the benefits of the advanced interface (Touch screen) on F740 hi/i ?

The benefits are easy intuitive operation, home screen showing setpoint, ambient temprature, temperature graph and event list. The event list saves all important events like door openings, all kind of alarms, warning limits, change of settings. All logging and Service data can be downloaded via USB Stick. For monitoring of Freezers and additional Eppendorf devices, VisioNize Software can be installed for remote control.

How is the sample access controlled?

Sample access is managed with the help of an electronic lock that works in combination with an active user managememt. The administrator is able set up users with different rights and levels. The user / some user groups have access to the samples and rights to acknowledge alarms and change settings.

What is the most cost-effective model of the F740 series?

The F740h shows the well-known LED Display and is insulated with PU Foam and Vacuum insulation panels. It has the same high quality as F740hi regarding construction of chamber and robustness of machine.

Which refrigerants are used in different models and which is the most environmental friendly ULT?

For F740h and F740hi we use the most environmental friendly hydrocarbon refrigerants (R290/R170) in a two stage cooling system with very low energy consumption data for the F740hi of 10.5 kWh/d at- 80C and 9.0 kWh/d at -70C.

Are the F740 devices noisy?

The CryoCube F740 has an improved sound level of 47.8 dB. The "i" versions provide you some silence level of down to 41.3 dB. These "i" versions are equipped with a sound-reduction-system. Based on a different air filter position at the front of the freezer, the air flow is now guided in a more silent way towards the ventilation system. At the backside of the freezer, a special compartment further reduces the sound level. Relax when working near a CryoCube F740i.

What means "Pull down time"?

This is the time required for a unit to pull down from Room temperature to -80 °C. This usually takes between 3-4 hours for an Eppendorf freezer. The pull down data for Eppendorf freezers can be found in our familiy brochure "Pure. Ultracold".

Which racking systems and accessories are available ?

Eppendorf offers a broad range of Stainless steel and Aluminium Racks for sample storage. In addition Eppendorf Storage Boxes of polypropylene are available in 2"", 2.5"", 3"",4"" and 5"" sizes for standard Cryovessels, SafeLock tubes, 5ml Eppendorf tubes, 15 and 50 ml conical tubes, PCR plates, Deepwell plates and MTPs. Where can I find license information about software components of CryoCube F70hi?

The software included in the CryoCube F740hii contains copyrighted software that is licensed under the GPL. A copy of that license is included in the settings of the device under “About this CryoCube F740hi”. You may obtain the complete corresponding source code from us for a period of three years after our last shipment of this product. Please direct your request to eppendorf@eppendorf.com. Can the inner doors of CryoCube F740hi be removed?

Yes this is possible. The inner doors can easily be removed for access to compartments during defrosting and cleaning.

Can the ULT freezers be placed in a room with ambient temperature of 4 °C?

This is not possible. Our Freezers are specified to operate in ambient temperatures between 10°C and 32°C.

Is the Eppendorf CryoCube F740h connectable to VisioNize Lab Suite?

Yes, the CryoCube F740h (box enabled) can be connected to VisioNize Lab Suite via a Gateway box. It enables remote monitoring and status checks, alert notifications form anywhere.

Is it possible to assist with information on how long it usually takes to freeze samples in a freezer to e.g. down to -70°C?

Unfortunately it is not possible to assist with data on freezing times as the time depends on several factors like type of sample and amount of it, type of solution/media in which the sample is maybe deposited, material of the vessels used, wall-thickness of the vessels used, volumes needed to be frozen, sample/vessel temperature before storage … So no tests were performed as the data would only be valid for one specific experiment under the specific conditions at that day. Therefore the only option will be that customer performs tests by himself under his conditions to get an idea on the time needed for freezing his samples to a specific temperature.

The CryoCube F740 series is equipped with reliable heavy-duty compressors (2-stage cascade cooling system). Quick pull-down times (250 min) enable fast re-use after cleaning/defrosting of the instrument. The freezers have short recovery times after opening to provide extra sample safety.
For even higher sample safety, the ULT freezers can be equipped with CO₂/LN₂ back-up systems and a chart recorder (Type II). Temperature monitor systems can be used to monitor the freezers remotely.
