Are start and end position of the SmartBlocks the same?

No. Start and end position are not identical.

How can the temperature accuracy be verified?

The best possible temperature accuracy can be guaranteed by individually adjusting a SmartBlock. Optimized temperature control for each block type keeps temperature overshoots and deviations caused by external interferences to a minimum. To guarantee optimal performance over the entire period of use, Eppendorf offers a preventive maintenance program and certification services: your Eppendorf ThermoMixers, ThermoStat C as well as the SmartBlocks are regularly cleaned, checked and adjusted. Additional information is available at: https://www.eppendorf.com/epservices . Customers can also verify the temperature accuracy by themself. Eppendorf provides for that purpose the Temperature Verification System – Single Well for Eppendorf Mastercyclers (0056 000.003) in combination with the 384 well Sensor (0056 002.006).

Can cell culture plates be used in the SmartBlock plates?

Cell culture plates comply with the SBS standard can be used in the SmartBlock plates. Temper polystyrene plates up to 70°C max. Further information can be found in the Operating Manual.

Is it possible to put the SmartBlocks for a rapid cool down into a -20°C freezer?

The SmartBlocks can be used at ambient temperatures of 5°C – 40°C and can be cooled appropriate. Cooling down of SmartBlocks in a freezer should not be done.

Which SmartBlocks and vessels can be used with ThermoMixers F?

The ThermoMixers F possess a fix installed SmartBlock and can only be used with the appropriate microtest tubes or plates, such as MTP’s, DWP’s or skirted plates complying the SBS standard. For using PCR plates our SmartBlocks PCR 96 and PCR 384 in combination with ThermoMixer C is the proper choice.

Do the IsoRacks fit upon the SmartBlocks for microreaction tubes (0.5 mL; 1.5 mL; 2.0 mL)?

No. The IsoRacks fit only upon the Thermoblocks for the older devices Thermomixer comfort, Thermomixer compact & ThermoStat plus.

Can PCR plates be used in SmartBlock plates respectively ThermoMixer FP?

SmartBlock plates and ThermoMixer FP (with the fixed SmartBlock plates) are dedicated for using MTP’s, DWP’s and also other skirted plates which meet the SBS standard. For optimal usage of PCR plates the SmartBlock PCR 96 and PCR 384 in combination with ThermoMixer C or ThermoStat C is the proper choice. These SmartBlocks possess conical bores which surround the conical wells of PCR plates properly for a perfect temperature transition.

Smart Block cryo Thaw on ThermoMixer C - What is the ‘Thawing cells’ program?

The 'Thawing cells' program is an optimized program to thaw mammalian cells in 1.8-2.0 mL cryovials: reproducibly contamination free standardized It is a ready-to use program, in most cases no changes are required. The pre-set time is 3 minutes (can be extended up to 5 minutes), the pre-set mixing frequency is 500 rpm (can be adapted between 300 – 800 rpm), the temperature profile is fixed. The settings are based on tests with standard mammalian cell lines (CHO, HEK, S16) up to highly sensitive stem cells (hiPSCs) at tested conditions with 2.0 mL cryovials / 1.0 mL fill (1 – 5 vials in parallel). Other volumes or more vials may require an adaption of thawing time. Further information can be found in the Application Note 437 .

What is the difference between the SmartBlock cryo thaw and the SmartBlock cryo?

The 'SmartBlock cryo thaw' replaces the 'SmartBlock cryo'. Newly implemented is an automatic function for thawing cells (program 'Thawing cells') which is available in combination with the ThermoMixer C.

Is it possible to use the SmartBlock cryo thaw with the ThermoStat C?

The SmartBlock cryo thaw is still compatible with the ThermoStat C. However, the automatic thawing function 'thawing cells' is limited to the ThermoMixer C as it requires mixing.

The ThermoMixer C does not show the program ‘Thawing cells’ when inserting the SmarBlock cry thaw. Why?

The software version 3.5.0 or higher is required on the ThermoMixer C to operate the program 'Thawing cells'. How to upgrade the software is described in the operating manual.

Is it possible to use the SmartExtender with the SmartBlock cryo thaw?

The Smart Extender can be used with the SmartBlock cryo thaw, but not in parallel a 'Thawing cells' program is running. In case the user is operating the SmartExtender and intends to start the thawing procedure, the user is informed by a message with the option to stop the SmartExtender and vice versa. There is no automatic stop or re-start of the running program to not disturb the application.

SmartBlock cryo thaw - Does the mixing during the thawing program harm the cells?

No, in opposite, a slight mixing (500 rpm paired with a small 3 mm orbit)serves to distribute the temperature in the vial evenly reduces temperature gradients and inhomogeneous warming of cells by preventing sedimentation. Reproducibility and confirm the suitability of the thawing method has been proven with:in-vial temperature measurementsanalyzing post-thawing cell viabilityfurther downstream tests (confirming pluripotency for stem cells). Is it possible to use former SmartBlock cryo with the program ‘thawing cells’?

No, the program 'thawing cells' is limited to the SmartBlock cryo thaw.

Using different vessel sizes within your lab workflow?
Flexibility has never been this easy. Eppendorf offers a broad range of Eppendorf SmartBlocks for tubes from 0.2 mL to 50 mL as well as plates (MTP, DWP, and PCR plates 96 / 384) to use with Eppendorf ThermoMixer^® C and ThermoStat C. All Eppendorf SmartBlocks are equipped with the outstanding Eppendorf QuickRelease system that makes the block exchange super fast and easy.
For optimal fit and temperature transfer we recommend to use Eppendorf Deepwell Plates with corresponding Eppendorf SmartBlock DWP 500 and Eppendorf SmartBlock DWP 1000. Please note Eppendorf SmartBlock DWP 500 and Eppendorf SmartBlock DWP 1000 can only be used with Eppendorf Deepwell Plates.
