No. The shape, diameter, and tube length of the Eppendorf SafeCode Microtubes is the same as of standard Eppendorf microtubes. They are compatible with a wide range of standard laboratory equipment like centrifuges, mixers, racks, boxes etc. The data matrix code on SafeCode consumables can be read with commonly available scanners (built into automatic equipment or hand-held) that can read data matrix codes. The scanner ultimately functions like a keyboard and can be connected to a computer.

For which applications can I use Eppendorf SafeCode Microtubes?

In general, for all applications where microtubes are routinely used. They are especially well suited for cold storage (e.g. at -80 °C), but can be used for sample and reagent handling, biomolecule purification and cell culture applications just as well. The Eppendorf SafeCode microtubes offer the same safety parameters as regular microtubes like centrifugation stability and lid tightness. At the same time, they offer a unique feature in this format – a human readable code (HRC) and the clear 2D data matrix code (DMC) on the lid, which can still be read with an up to 30 % damaged code. It is a unique ID to identify each tube. In addition, it contains ID-specific information about the consumable (certificates, Lot-number, etc.). It enables utmost sample tracking, tracing and documentation.

The tubes are made of high quality, transparent polypropylene and resistant to majority of commonly used chemical substances in the laboratory. Which purity grades or variants are available for Eppendorf SafeCode Conical Tubes?

The Eppendorf SafeCode Conical Tubes are available in the following purity grades: Eppendorf Quality and Sterile/Pyrogen-free. For general quality certificates, please refer to the tab “Certificates” on the online product page. For lot-specific certificates (only provided for the purity “Sterile/Pyrogen-free”), please refer to www.eppendorf.com/certificates . The DNA and Protein LoBind as well as Amber variants will be available in the future.

Up to which g-force Eppendorf SafeCode Conical Tubes can be centrifuged?

The SafeCode Conical Tubes 5 mL are resistant up to 25,000 x g (*), when used in combination with a suitable rotor or adapter. *: Test conditions: 45° fixed-angle rotor at 40 °C, with aqueous salt solution (density 1.0 g/mL) and 90 min. The SafeCode Conical Tubes 15 mL and 50 mL are resistant up to 19,500 × g (**), when used in combination with a suitable rotor or adapter. **: Test conditions: Rotor FA-45-6-30 in Eppendorf Centrifuge 5810 R (using a suitable centrifuge adapter for 15 mL tube), sample: saline solution (density: 1.0 g/mL), centrifugation temp.: 25 °C, centrifugation time: 90 min.

What SafeCode ID-Specific Information can be accessed at Eppendorf Website?

For each SafeCode Consumable its specific information can be accessed by self-identification of the consumable at the Eppendorf dataport on the Eppendorf Website eppendorf.com/certificates - "SafeCode certificates & documents". This includes: • Lot Nr. • Product description incl. purity • Article no. – link to eShop • Instructions for use • Certificates of quality and purity (general and lot-specific) • Technical data/drawing This information can be downloaded manually (single PDF files or zip file bundle) or automatically through the Eppendorf eLabNext platform.

The SafeCode enables unambiguous identification of the sample. It encodes a number assigned by Eppendorf, which is unique for each Eppendorf Consumable. On the other hand, via the Internet or with the help of eLabInventory / eLabJournal, the sample identification can be digitally supplemented by consumable information (e.g. quality certificate, purity, volume, article number). The SafeCode is more than just a data matrix code with ECC200 error correction. It also provides the ability to easily and completely digitally document the used vessel. The SafeCodes of the CryoStorage Vials SafeCodes are constructed either from EQ + 8 digits or ER + 8 digits.

What is data matrix code?

A data matrix code is a 2D barcode. It is a picture of dates and symbols. Data in a Datamatrix code is machine-readable using optical readers, such as camera scanners, and processed electronically.

How do I know that a code has not been awarded twice?

Eppendorf guarantees that all SafeCodes are only used once for Eppendorf products. But it may be that the same code was also given by another manufacturer for a foreign product.

What kind of devices and software do I need to use the SafeCode system?

To read and process the SafeCode system, you need a Datamatrix code compatible reader and GS1-128 compliant software. Optimum use is ensured by the RackScan b and RackScan s, as well as eLAB Inventory.

Is it possible to store samples in Eppendorf SafeCode consumables in the freezer?

Yes, the SafeCode consumables (tubes, plates and cryo vials) can be stored down to -86 °C.

For what applications are SafeCode consumables suitable for?

The SafeCode consumables offer enormous benefits when fully digital sample tracking and information archiving is required. In principle, the SafeCode consumables may be used for the same applications as their standard (no SafeCode) counterparts. The micro-centrifuge and conical tubes may be used for various sample/reagent processing, purification, and storage steps. The deep-well plates may be used for higher throughput sample/reagent handling and storage. The PCR plates for PCR and similar applications (sequencing, NGS).

What is SafeCode and what information does it encode?

The SafeCode is a pre-labelled and durable coding on consumables (data matrix code and clear coding). The SafeCode ID is a serial number issued by Eppendorf that is unique to every Eppendorf SafeCode Consumable. This facilitates a precise tracing of samples in the laboratory. Additionally, this ID links all the relevant product data and product specific documents, such as lot number, technical data and certification of conformity. This data can be accessed via the Eppendorf dataport on teh Eppendorf website.

Is it necessary to buy new equipment to be able to use Eppendorf SafeCode consumables?

The SafeCode data matrix code can be read with hand-held scanners (smartphones app may also be possible). The hand-held scanner ultimately functions like a keyboard and can be connected to every computer in the same way. Alternatively, the user can read the clear-text code manually and thus no additional equipment is necessary. Correspondingly, entries in eLAB can be made via a hand scanner for the 2D code, but also via the keyboard for the human readable code.

Are Eppendorf SafeCode consumables autoclavable?

SafeCode Consumables are not suitable for autoclaving. Where applicable (conical tubes, cryostorage vials) we recommend our pre-sterilized option.

Are SafeCode labels resistant to chemicals?

SafeCode consumables have same resistance as the standard consumables (without the SafeCode) please refer to the respective application note (056) or Operating Manual for more details.

A barcode is an optical representation of data which is machine-readable. Classic 1D barcodes code data by varying the width of the parallel lines as well as their spacings. Two-dimensional codes (2D) are based on dots, hexagons, rectangles, or other geometric patterns. These codes are also called data matrix codes.
2D codes are based on the following specifications:
• Finder pattern consists of two constant lines at left and bottom (clock track).
• The quiet zone surrounds the finder pattern. It should be free of any black-white contrast.
• The code can be white on black background or black on white background.
