Can filter inserts that project approx. 1 cm out of the tubes be centrifuged in the MiniSpin/ MiniSpin plus?

These so-called spin columns can be used when the rotor lid used is made of stainless steel. This application is not possible with the older polypropylene lid. Almost all spin columns from a variety of purification kits can be used with the stainless steel lid. Ypur local contact would be pleased to answer any further questions concerning tube dimensions.

Is the MiniSpin/ MiniSpin plus equipped with an imbalance switch-off function?

No. These centrifuges have been extensively tested and do not need an imbalance switch-off function.

How high is the noise level of the MiniSpin/ MiniSpin plus?

The measured noise level is less than 49 dB(A) / 52 dB(A) (MiniSpin / MiniSpin plus). Both centrifuges are therefore distinguished by an extremely quiet run.

Can the MiniSpin/ MiniSpin plus be operated in a cooling room?

The centrifuges can be operated in ambient conditions of 10 - 40 °C. The permitted relative humidity must not exceed 75 %. When transferring the centrifuge from a colder into a warmer environment, the centrifuge must either be allowed to run warm for a half an hour in the cooling room or it must be allowed to warm up in the warmer environment for at least 3 hours. During this time, it must not be connected to a power source. In order to avoid damage from condensation, centrifuges should generally not be submitted to frequent temperature changes.

Are motor brushes required for the drive unit of the MiniSpin/MiniSpin plus?

No, both centrifuges are distinguished by a maintenance-free (inductive) drive unit.

What distinguishes the silver-colored aluminum rotor F-45-12-11 from the black-colored aluminum rotor F-45-12-11 of the MiniSpin/ MiniSpin plus?

The silver rotor F-45-12-11 may only be used in the MiniSpin as it is only permitted for the lower maximum rotational speed of this centrifuge. However, this rotor can no longer be ordered. Instead, like the MiniSpin plus, the MiniSpin is now supplied with the black rotor F-45-12-11.

What is the order number for the polypropylene lid of the rotor F-45-12-11?

The polypropylene lid for the rotor F-45-12-11 of the MiniSpin/ MiniSpin plus can no longer be ordered. In its place, a stainless steel lid distinguished by a high degree of chemical resistance and enabling the use of particularly long and previously unusable spin columns is now available under the order number 5452 702.000.

"Err 8" appears on the display. What does this mean?

The error code "Err 8" appears on the display of the centrifuge if the rotor is not screwed tight enough. Therefore check the position of the rotor.

What are the maximum values for relative centrifugal force (RCF, g-force) or for the rotational speed (rpm) that can be set for the MiniSpin/ MiniSpin plus?

The maximum rotational speed that can be set for the MiniSpin is 13,400 rpm, equal to 12,100 x g. The maximum rotational speed for the MiniSpin plus is 14,500 rpm, equal to 14,100 x g.

What are the minimum values for the relative centrifugal force (RCF, g-force) or for the rotational speed (rpm) that can be set for the MiniSpin or the MiniSpin plus?

The lowest rotational speed that can be set for both centrifuges is 800 rpm, equal to approx. 50 x g. In contrast to the MiniSpin, the MiniSpin plus can be switched back and forth between rcf and rpm by simultaneously pressing the "speed" arrow keys.

What does "Err 5" mean and how can I restart the MiniSpin/ MiniSpin plus?

The error code "Err 5" appears on the display of the centrifuge if the lid latch is defective. If this error occurs during centrifugation, the device must remain switched on without being operated for 8 minutes. After that, the centrifuge lid can be opened by pressing the "open" button.

What is IQ or OQ and what do I need them for?

Installation and operational qualification; the IQ documents that the device has been delivered and installed correctly. The OQ checks the correct functioning of a device. IQ/OQ ensure that your quality management requirements are met and that your device operates properly and in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.

How often does the OQ need to be carried out for a centrifuge?

The company is responsible for technical checks of devices. Eppendorf recommends regular device qualifications depending on the intensity of use, however, they should be carried out at least once a year.

Shall we close the lid of the refrigerated centrifuge after the centrifugation is finished?

You should close the lid, if using the centrifuge frequently at lower temperatures. When not in use (e.g. over night) switch off the centrifuge and clean the rotor chamber. The lid should stay open to dry.

Can I carry out software updates myself?

No. Software updates for centrifuges with a USB interface can be carried out easily by a qualified Eppendorf Service technician via the existing USB port. This ensures that safety factors are up-to-date, that the latest rotors are detected and the running of the machine is optimized with the latest parameters.

How often does my centrifuge need to be serviced?

This depends on how intensively it is used and varies depending on the load on the device. However, it is recommended to have the centrifuge serviced at least once a year.

Is the rotor inspection part of the service programs?

No, it can be booked in addition to service programs and depends on the type of rotor (fixed-angle rotor or swing-bucket rotor).

What types of training or online training do you offer to enable me to improve my skills?

How much are the different centrifuge service programs?

The cost depends on the model and on the service that is performed. Please contact your local Eppendorf Service.

How can I clean my centrifuges myself?

Use a neutral cleaning agent for cleaning. We recommend using alcohol or alcohol-based disinfectants for disinfection. Please ensure that the applicable legal regulations and guidelines are observed when selecting the disinfection method. You can find a detailed description in the video "Centrifuge Maintenance - The basis for your lab safety" or in the operating manual which can be downloaded from our website.

Why should I have my centrifuge serviced at regular intervals?

To ensure the optimum performance and precision of your device. This also enables the early detection of any defects which can then be corrected easily. Performing a large number of cycles increases the susceptibility to rotor damage. Any damage can be detected at an early stage during a qualified inspection, i.e. the rotor can be replaced before any serious damage occurs.

What do you need to look out for before carrying out a service?

The device needs to be decontaminated first. The device must be freely accessible and all samples removed from the device.

Powerful and user-friendly MiniSpin^® and MiniSpin^® plus are small enough so that each workstation can be equipped with a "personal" centrifuge. Two models are available to meet your performance requirements. MiniSpin plus provides speed sufficient for molecular biology separations.
Everyday centrifugation tasks become easier with the MiniSpin^® and Centrifuge MiniSpin^® plus mini centrifuges. Both offer soft-touch one-finger lid closure for ergonomic lid locking and automatic lid opening at the end of the run to prevent sample warming and to enable easy access to samples. Two models are available to meet your performance requirements: the Centrifuge MiniSpin model delivers speeds up to 12,100 x g and the MiniSpin plus model provides speed sufficient for molecular biology applications (up to 14,100 x g).

These portable mini centrifuges have an extremely compact footprint and a user-friendly keypad with a separate short-spin key to enable fast and comfortable centrifugation.

The rotor fits 12 x 1.5 mL or 2.0 mL vessels, an additional rotor option is also available for up to 2 x 8-tube PCR strips.

Disposal of packaging
The packaging of the centrifuge contains different materials, this can include a wooden pallet, cardboard, a plastic dust cover, and some foam parts. Recycling of materials becomes more and more important every day: Are you aware that nearly all cardboard material is recycled in Europe? Our centrifuge packaging cardboard material consists of ca. 50% recycling material. Please support the global sustainability initiative of recycling valuable raw material by also collecting the freezer cardboard packaging material and disposing of it in the appropriate collection container at your organization. In respect to the plastic dust cover made of LD-PE and the foam parts, we recommend to select a dedicated recycling partner where PE material can be recycled. We suggest you contact your local waste hauler or facility management team to understand the available recycling options for your organization.

Disposal of instrument
Our centrifuges last for many years, but if they need to be replaced, we kindly ask you to fulfill local requirements for disposal of these instruments. We strongly recommend a certified local recycling partner with experience in instruments with active cooling. Keeping it “local“ reduces the impact of transportation, and the „certified“ aspect is recommended due to the safe and sustainable removal and recycling of the cooling liquids if it is a refrigerated centrifuge.

Decontamination
This piece of equipment was used in a laboratory and/ or was used to handle biological samples. Please keep in mind to adequately decontaminate the equipment which needs to be disposed. Check local requirements. For more information, get in contact with your local biosafety officer and/ or waste officer. Check if your local recycling partner has special instructions and/ or documentation requirements. You may also use the Eppendorf decontamination form sheet as guidance.
