How is the Centrifuge 59xx protected during transport? Is there a transport protection device?

No, the Centrifuge 59xx does not come with a transport protection device. It is packaged in polystyrene for protection. Because the rotor is not in the centrifuge during transport, there are no movable parts to make a transport protection device necessary.

Can I still change the settings when I have started the Centrifuge 5920 R/ 5910 R?

Yes, the speed, the time and the temperature can be changed even when the centrifuge is running. To do this, please press the arrow keys below SPEED, TIME or TEMP values in the display. To change the radius or acceleration and breaking ramps please use the enter/menu key and the menu arrow keys to proceed.

How can I recognize in the display of the Centrifuge 59xx whether I have selected “RPM" or “RCF"?

Whether you have selected RPM or RCF, is displayed next to the RPM and RCF value respectively in the display.

What is the minimum rotational speed (rpm) of the Centrifuge 59xx, and in which increments can it be increased?

The minimum rotational speed is 10 rpm (1 x g), irrespective of the inserted rotor. The minimum rotational speed can be increased in increments of 10 rpm (10 x g) up to 5,000 rpm (3,000 x g). 5,000 – 14,000 rpm (3,000 – 22,132 x g) can be set in increments of 100 rpm (100 x g).

Is it possible to adjust the Centrifuge 59xx in a way that it stops on its own, meaning without active braking?

Yes. Free deceleration of your centrifuge can be achieved by setting the braking level to 0.

Centrifuge 59xx is programmable. What is saved during the programming?

All manually entered data such as rotational speed or RCF, maximum radius, run time, acceleration and braking ramps, "at set rpm", temperature can be saved. Further, to delay the start for incubation reasons e.g., a timer can be set to up to 60 min.

Does Eppendorf offer a rotor for PCR strips for Centrifuge 59xx?

A PCR strip rotor is not available. Adapters (5425 715.005) for single PCR tubes are available for 1.5/2 mL microtube rotors.

Is it possible to spin 50 mL and 15 mL tubes together in one rotor?

Yes, it is possible, provided that the rotor is loaded symmetrically. This means that the 50 mL tubes and the 15 mL tubes are positioned opposite one another and are positioned symmetrically. Please use the appropriate adapters for the tubes.

How big is the g-force difference between the lowest and the highest plate when loading a Plate/Tube-bucket of rotor S-4x1000 with 7 microplates?

The following g-forces are reached with the rotor S-4x1000: Highest plate: 3,000 x g (radius: 196 mm); Lowest plate: 1,948 x g (radius: 127.3 mm).

How big is the g-force difference between the lowest and the highest plate when loading a plate bucket of the rotor S-4x750 with 4 microplates?

The following g-forces are reached with the rotor S-4x750: Highest plate: 4.035 x g (radius: 163.5 mm); Lowest plate: 3,087 x g (radius: 129 mm).

Is there an adapter for slides?

Up to 12 slides can be inserted into the CombiSlide adapter (5825 706.005) and then centrifuged in the appropriate swing-bucket rotors (plate bucket or universal bucket with plate carrier) of Centrifuge 59xx.

Can rotor S-4x750 be loaded with a mixture of round tube and plate buckets ?

Yes, this so-called mixed loading is possible. Please ensure that the same type of buckets are always used in opposing positions.

Can rotor S-4x1000 be loaded with a combination of round tube, plate and high capaciy-buckets?

Yes, this so-called mixed loading is possible. Please ensure that the same type of buckets are always used in opposing positions.

There are 2 different adapters for 15 mL tubes. One for tubes with round bottom and one for conical tubes. Why can’t I use one adapter for both tubes?

No, unfortunately this is not possible. In order to be able to reach the high rotational speeds, the adapters must be form-locking.

Can the rotors of Centrifuge 5810/ R and 5804/ R be used for Centrifuges of the 59xx family?

No, this is not possible. Please do only use rotors which are labeled with the Centrifuge name 5920 R or 59XX.

The writing on one rotor says, for example, "6 x 125 g". Does this mean that the centrifuge only allows for a RCF of 125 or that it can only be loaded with a maximum of 6 times 125 gram?

This label states that the rotor can be loaded with a maximum of 6 x 125 gram. "g" is the official abbreviation for "gram". Where "g" is used as an abbreviation of "g-force", the number and "x g" are used. Example: 10,800 x g.

Can rotors, buckets and adapter be autoclaved?

Yes, fixed-angle rotors, rotor lids, buckets, bucket-caps and adapter can be autoclaved for 20 minutes at 121 °C. The 59xx swing-bucket rotor crosses can not be autoclaved. After 50 autoclaving cycles, we strongly recommend to exchange aerosol-tight caps and sealings in QuickLock-rotors.

"Does the Centrifuge 59xx have an energy saving function?“

Yes, the ECO shut-off automatically switches off the compressor after 8 hours of non-use (standard setting) or if desired, after 1, 2 or 4 hours. The device has a stand-by button. For example, centrifuge 5920 R has an ultra low power consumption of only <2 W in stand-by mode. Further, the extraordinary high centrifuge efficiency limits the max. power consumption to 1,300 W.

What is the meaning of the red knob on the rotor lid?

A fixed-angle rotor with a red knob on the rotor lid indicates aerosol-tightness.

How does the Centrifuge 58xx and 59xx recognize that a different rotor is in use?

A new rotor will automatically be recognized as soon as it starts spinning. Recognition of the rotor can be performed manually by making it spin counterclockwise (roughly 200 rpm necessary), or by turning the Centrifuge on. As soon as the rotor starts spinning it will be recognized. In case the indicated max. speed of the previous rotor was higher, speed must be confirmed in a display pop-up. The user has the choice between the rotor-specific max. speed or a lower speed, that can be set directly.

What is to be considered when using rotor S-4x1000 and 1-liter bottles?

Each position of the rotor must be equipped with a bucket. Centrifugation with only 2 x 1-Liter bottles is possible. But we recommend to load the 4 positions in the rotor equally to reduce vibration and noise.

What is the advantage of FastTemp?

At rotor standstill (continuous cooling) the cooling process is slower than while centrifugation. With FastTemp you directly start cooling without samples and with temperature- and rotor-specific centrifugation speed.

What is “FastTemp pro”?

With FastTemp pro you can program your 59xx to start the FastTemp run at a defined point of time, once or regularly.

What do I have to consider when using FastTemp function with aerosol-tight buckets?

Cooling of buckets with aerosol-tight caps takes longer and may lead to underpressure in the buckets. Don´t use aerosol-tight caps while FastTemp is running.

Which possibilities do I have for round bottom tubes longer than 120 mm?

You can use rotor S-4x1000 with round buckets for 13 and 16 mm tubes of 121 and 125 mm height respectively.

Can I perform a software upgrade on my own?

No. Software upgrades on 59xx centrifuges can easily be performed via USB port by a trained service technician. He ensures that the technical parameters, such as imbalance tolerance, are correctly adapted to the new software version.

What is the radius correction for and when do I need it?

The conversion from speed to g-force is based on the biggest radius of the rotor. If you are using an adapter for tubes, you can adjust the value for the radius manually. You can find the value for the radius of an adapter in a rotor in the technical data of the rotor. The adjustment of the radius is important when exact reproduction of protocols is necessary to ensure accurate results.

What does “at set rpm” mean?

With “at set rpm” you can specify when time counting should begin, immediately or when 95 % of the speed has been reached.

Do you have adapters for conical bottles 175-250 or 500 mL?

Yes. 175-250 mL conical bottles can be used with Eppendorf adapters with flat bottom. For this adapter you will further need a special conical form insert from the tube supplier, which has to be placed in the Eppendorf adapter. For 500 mL conical Corning tubes Eppendorf has a special adapter for which no extra insert is needed.

What do I have to consider when loading buckets incompletely?

Buckets must be loaded symmetrically in a way that the load on the pivots is even. This will be reached by concentrating the load around the balance point of the bucket. Ensure that buckets swing freely by carrying out a manual spinning test. The buckets should swing out correctly without touching the rotor cross or the rotor chamber.

Can we use our rolling cabinet 5821 020 010 for the 5920R?

The rolling cabinet 5821 020 010 is too small for the 5920R. Our Mobile Tables 5921 000 010 and 5921 000 012 are an alternative.

For which centrifuge can we use our mobile tables 5921 000 010 and 5921 000 012?

The mobile tables can be used for centrifuges 59xx as well as 58xx.

Why should I have my centrifuge serviced at regular intervals?

To ensure the optimum performance and precision of your device. This also enables the early detection of any defects which can then be corrected easily. Performing a large number of cycles increases the susceptibility to rotor damage. Any damage can be detected at an early stage during a qualified inspection, i.e. the rotor can be replaced before any serious damage occurs.

Can I carry out software updates myself?

No. Software updates for centrifuges with a USB interface can be carried out easily by a qualified Eppendorf Service technician via the existing USB port. This ensures that safety factors are up-to-date, that the latest rotors are detected and the running of the machine is optimized with the latest parameters.

How often does my centrifuge need to be serviced?

This depends on how intensively it is used and varies depending on the load on the device. However, it is recommended to have the centrifuge serviced at least once a year.

What do you need to look out for before carrying out a service?

The device needs to be decontaminated first. The device must be freely accessible and all samples removed from the device.

How much are the different centrifuge service programs?

The cost depends on the model and on the service that is performed. Please contact your local Eppendorf Service.

What is IQ or OQ and what do I need them for?

Installation and operational qualification; the IQ documents that the device has been delivered and installed correctly. The OQ checks the correct functioning of a device. IQ/OQ ensure that your quality management requirements are met and that your device operates properly and in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.

How often does the OQ need to be carried out for a centrifuge?

The company is responsible for technical checks of devices. Eppendorf recommends regular device qualifications depending on the intensity of use, however, they should be carried out at least once a year.

How can I clean my centrifuges myself?

Use a neutral cleaning agent for cleaning. We recommend using alcohol or alcohol-based disinfectants for disinfection. Please ensure that the applicable legal regulations and guidelines are observed when selecting the disinfection method. You can find a detailed description in the video "Centrifuge Maintenance - The basis for your lab safety" or in the operating manual which can be downloaded from our website.

Is the rotor inspection part of the service programs?

No, it can be booked in addition to service programs and depends on the type of rotor (fixed-angle rotor or swing-bucket rotor).

Shall we close the lid of the refrigerated centrifuge after the centrifugation is finished?

You should close the lid, if using the centrifuge frequently at lower temperatures. When not in use (e.g. over night) switch off the centrifuge and clean the rotor chamber. The lid should stay open to dry.

Disposal of packaging
The packaging of the centrifuge contains different materials, this can include a wooden pallet, cardboard, a plastic dust cover, and some foam parts. Recycling of materials becomes more and more important every day: Are you aware that nearly all cardboard material is recycled in Europe? Our centrifuge packaging cardboard material consists of ca. 50% recycling material. Please support the global sustainability initiative of recycling valuable raw material by also collecting the freezer cardboard packaging material and disposing of it in the appropriate collection container at your organization. In respect to the plastic dust cover made of LD-PE and the foam parts, we recommend to select a dedicated recycling partner where PE material can be recycled. We suggest you contact your local waste hauler or facility management team to understand the available recycling options for your organization.

Disposal of instrument
Our centrifuges last for many years, but if they need to be replaced, we kindly ask you to fulfill local requirements for disposal of these instruments. We strongly recommend a certified local recycling partner with experience in instruments with active cooling. Keeping it “local“ reduces the impact of transportation, and the „certified“ aspect is recommended due to the safe and sustainable removal and recycling of the cooling liquids if it is a refrigerated centrifuge.

Decontamination
This piece of equipment was used in a laboratory and/ or was used to handle biological samples. Please keep in mind to adequately decontaminate the equipment which needs to be disposed. Check local requirements. For more information, get in contact with your local biosafety officer and/ or waste officer. Check if your local recycling partner has special instructions and/ or documentation requirements. You may also use the Eppendorf decontamination form sheet as guidance.
