Is the Varispenser resistant to morpholine (tetrahydro-1,4-oxazine)?

Yes. Due to the hygroscopic properties of morpholine, please use the drying tube (4960 851.00). The drying tube should be filled with dried calcium carbonate.

What material is the Varispenser 2/2x made of and what chemicals is it resistant to?

Please refer to the Operating Manual on our homepage for information on materials before use. The White Paper 037 "Chemical Stability of Varispenser ® 2 and 2x" provides an overview of the chemical resistance of both Varispenser as well as the adapter rings.

I would like to distribute liquid agar onto petri dishes with the Varispenser. How hot can the agar be for this?

Varispensers are measurement devices for which the guaranteed accuracy, precision or error limits only apply in a restricted temperature range of 15 - 40 °C (conforming to DIN 12650). Applications with liquids outside this temperature range are not recoommended and can only be carried out at the user's own risk. At higher temperatures up to 60 °C the plastic materials fluorocarbon and polypropylene will be fully chemically resistant, but mechanically they will become slightly softer. When hot agar is aspirated out of the bottle, cooling will take place in the cold Varispenser. Since agar becomes much firmer at ca. 35 °C, blockage can easily occur. In any case immediate cleaning will be required, in particular of the valve.

Is it possible to autoclave the Varispenser attached to a full flask?

Yes, this is possible. Please mind the following precautions: The Varispenser is loosely screwed on the bottle, the volume setting knob is set to 20% of the nominal volume and the piston is completely pulled out.

Is it possible to autoclave the Varispenser 2/2x attached to a supply bottle?

No, it is not possible to autoclave the Varispenser 2/2x attached to a bottle. The device must be placed horizontal on a cloth in the autoclave. Please refer for details to the Operating Manual.

Is it possible to exchange the canula arm of the Varispenser 2 and 2x among each other?

Yes, it is possible to exchange the canual arm of the Varispenser 2 and Varispenser 2x. Please note that the device with the canula arm of Varipenser 2x is then capable of recirculating the liquid back into the bottle.

What is the "flexible discharge tube" used for using the Varispenser 2/2x?

The flexible discharge tube of Varispenser 2/2x can be used to transfer liquid from the supply bottle into small or narrow tubes or bottles.

For which liquids a drying tube is beneficial when using the Varispenser 2/2x?

The Varispenser 2/2x should be used with the drying tube when dispensing sensitive liquids to protect them against CO2 and humidity. The drying tube must be filled with a suitable drying agent. Selection of suitable drying agents are • Silica gel with a particle size of 1 mm – 3 mm • CaCO 2 • NaOH pills with a diameter of 5 mm for the absorption of CO2

Is it possible to dispense sterile medium with the Varispenser 2/2x?

Yes, it is possible to dispense sterile medium with the Varispenser 2/2x. A sterile microfilter with luer connector (filter not available via Eppendorf) can be connected via the ventilation screw at the back of the device. The filter helps to keep the sterility of the medium.

Is it possible to adjust the Varispenser 2/2x to certain liquids?

Yes, it is possible to adjust the Varispenser 2/2x for liquids with different properties than water. Please refer to the "Instructions for Use" for further information.

How can the Varispenser 2/2x be decontaminated?

The outer parts of the Varispenser 2/2x can be wiped with lint-free tissue moistened with a cleaning or decontaminating agent. The Varispenser 2/2x can be also autoclaved. The dispenser does not need to be dissembled for autoclaving, but it must be placed horizontal on a cloth in the autoclave. Please check the Instructions for Use for suitable agents as well as details for autoclaving.

Can the Varispenser 2/2x be used to dispense a conc. sulfuric acid which contains potassium bichromate and silver sulfate?

Yes, you can use the Varispenser 2/2x for this application. Please notice, when using concentrated acids a drying tube should be connected to the Varispenser. More information about the chemical resistance of the Varispenser 2/2x is available here .

Master difficult liquid dispensing tasks with the Varispenser 2 and Varispenser 2x universally applicable bottle-top dispensers. Available in six different sizes for liquid dispensing of volumes from 0.2 – 100 mL, the Varispenser 2 and 2x are designed to consistently dispense selected volumes with no reagent waste. The unique PFA sealing lip technology prevents crystal building from media residue by wiping off the inner cylinder wall during dispensing. This technology, combined with their high chemical resistance, allows the Varispenser 2 and 2x to be used for nearly all kinds of liquids, including aggressive solutions like acids, bases or solvents.
A special thread design and additional thread adapters ensure their use with most large supply and reagent bottles in the laboratory, while an extra air vent cap helps prevent possible contamination from the supply bottle. With a 360° rotating valve block offering safe and easy access in all positions, Varispenser 2 and Varispenser 2x really do make aliquoting liquids safe and convenient.
The Varispenser 2x has an additional recirculation valve which prevents reagent loss while ventilating. Both variants are fully autoclavable.

How to use a Varispenser 2 bottle-top dispenser

Attach the telescopic aspirating tube and recirculation valve (Varispenser 2x only) to the bottle-top dispenser before attaching it to your supply bottle using the appropriate adapter. Unlock the volume selection slider by pushing it to the right, slide it to your desired volume and lock it by pushing the slider to the left. Vent the dispenser by pulling up the piston and pushing it down to dispense liquid into any target vessel until the liquid inside the cylinder is free from air bubbles. Dispense liquid by following the same steps after venting. Note that the dispenser is not a suitable bottle closure and should be removed from the bottle and properly cleaned after use.
