Stem cell research is a broad field, dealing with embryonic and adult stem cells (e.g. mesenchymal and neural stem cells) or induced pluripotent cells. Scientists hope to gain valuable insights from the study of stem cells, e.g. in developmental biology. Understanding cell cycle control, cell specialization, and cell-host interactions are some of the challenges. In drug discovery, stem cells are evolving into cell culture models and tools for cell-based assays. Last but not least, cell therapy is on everyone’s lips with stem cells as the product itself to potentially cure a broad range of diseases. For commercialization, companies are looking into establishing the necessary infrastructures. They explore novel cell culture methods and expand cell lines in order to make cultivation processes reliable and scalable.
