PCR was a milestone in biological research as it opened the door to many possibilities for gene manipulation and detection. The concept of PCR was put to work in 1985 by Kary Mullis. The invention was awarded by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993.

PCR machines have a history and the technical progress over the last nearly 30 years is impressing. Today, gradient functions, different heating ramps, heated lids, or connectivity are standard.
