Why choose an Eppendorf mechanical pipette?

More than 60 years ago, Eppendorf launched the very first mechanical piston-stroke pipette and changed laboratory work forever. Since then, we have long been established as one of the leading pipette brands worldwide. There are many reasons why scientists choose our manual pipettes, including quality, accuracy, longevity, comfort, and ergonomics:

Comfortable, effortless pipetting

All our manual pipettes feature a lightweight, well-balanced, and highly ergonomic design in line with the Eppendorf PhysioCare Concept®. Our manual pipette models have several innovative features to minimize hand fatigue and strain, so you can breeze through long pipetting sessions without being held back.

These innovations in pipette design include:

  • Spring-loaded tip cones - Almost all of our mechanical pipette models have the spring-loaded tip cone feature. A spring in the lower part limits the attachment forces and guarantees a secure pipette tip attachment.

  • SoftEject technology – All non-adjustable multi-channel pipettes from Eppendorf feature the innovative SoftEject technology. With one press of the button, tips are ejected in succession from the outside inwards to reduce tip ejection forces by up to 50 %.

  • SoftAttach® technology – Built into our 16- and 24-channel pipette systems and selected Move It® adjustable tip spacing pipette models using our epT.I.P.S.® 384 pipette tips, SoftAttach technology greatly reduces tip attachment forces, while offering a reliable tip fit.

What vessel types are you working with?

Eppendorf single-channel pipettes are a great versatile option, especially if you’re working with singular vessels like tubes. However, if you’re working with plates, gels, and other vessels with multiple wells requiring the same volume, multi-channel pipettes can drastically speed up your workflows. By transferring liquid into several wells at once, you can experience greater efficiency and consistency, while reducing strain and fatigue. This makes multi-channel pipettes ideal for high-throughput applications like PCR and ELISA.

When choosing a multi-channel mechanical pipette, you should consider the number of channels that best suit your vessel type and application. For 96-well plates and PCR strips, you should choose 8- and 12-channel pipettes. However, for applications requiring higher throughput using 384-well plates, 16- and 24-channel pipettes take speed and efficiency to the next level.

Switching between different vessel types?

With their adjustable tip spacing, Research plus Move It pipettes let you switch between different vessel types, such as tubes, gels, and plates with ease. The Move It range includes 4-, 6-, 8-, and 12-channel pipettes, offering nominal volumes from 20 – 1,200 µL and pipette tip cone distances between 4.5 – 33 mm. For more information on our mechanical pipettes with adjustable tip spacing, visit our Move It product page.

Do you need fixed or variable volume pipettes?

Variable volume pipettes offer the highest volume flexibility, with our Research 3 neo, Research plus, and Reference 2 pipette families covering a volume range from 0.1 µL to 10 mL1 . Alternatively, if your workflows require pipetting one single volume over and over, our fixed-volume pipettes can let you work faster with reduced errors. Our Research plus pipettes have fixed volume variants ranging from 10 to 1,000 µL, and Reference 2 fixed volume pipettes range from 1 µL to 2 mL.2

1 Reference 2 pipettes up to 5 mL.
2 Fixed volume pipettes are available in single-channel variants only

Working in sterile environments?

All Eppendorf mechanical pipettes are fully autoclavable and are highly resistant against a variety of cleaning agents, making them suitable for easy decontamination and for working in sterile environments. With design features specifically for class A/B cleanrooms and other sterile environments, the Reference 2 mechanical pipette has a low-adhesive surface and minimal cavities, grooves, and sliding parts, making decontamination both easy and effective.
