The noise level of Eppendorf Microcentrifuges ranges from 49 dB(A) to 58 dB(A). What does that mean? How can Eppendorf Micro- and Multipurpose centrifuges be opened in case of a power failure?

Can the fixed-angle rotors of Eppendorf Microcentrifuges be operated without rotor lids?

The fixed-angle rotor FA-45-18-11 can be used with or without rotor lid. With rotor lid the centrifugation is aerosol-tight and the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R is even quieter. The aerosol-tight centrifugation can only be carried out with the rotor lid. Especially when working with pathogenic microorganisms, we recommend the usage of the aerosol-tight lid. When centrifuging filter devices like spin columns or other comparable tubes, the aerosol-tight rotor lid must be used in any case. This protects the centrifuge from damage – e. g. by torn-off tube lids.

Which tubes can be used in the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R?

1.5 ml and 2.0 ml Eppendorf ® tubes can be spun in the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R. With the help of adapters, the centrifugation of 0.2 ml PCR tubes, 0.6 ml Microtainer, 0.5 ml and 0.4 ml micro tubes is also possible. Even so-called spin columns (e.g. Quiagen, Macherey-Nagel, Vivascience) can be centrifuged. For centrifugation of spin columns, the rotor lid must be used.

For which applications the Centrifuge 5418 R can be used?

Centrifuge 5418 R allows a broad variety of applications. Up to 18 micro test tubes can be centrifuged at 16,873 x g. It can be used with tubes from 0.2 up to 2.0 mL. Possible applications include: - Isolation of DNA, RNA and proteins - Spin columns / Filter inserts - Aerosol-tight centrifugation of infectious samples - Pelletizing of cells (bacteria, eukaryotic cells) up to 2.0 mL - Spin down of PCR mixtures in tubes

What is the FastTemp function of refrigerated Eppendorf Micro- and Multipurpose centrifuges?

The FastTemp function is a specific temperature control run which was developed to reach the set temperature as quickly as possible. This temperature control run can already be started during sample preparation by pressing the FastTemp button. This enables a centrifugation at the desired temperature directly after sample preparation without time loss. Yes. Each Eppendorf Microcentrifuge has the possibility to use rpm or g-force (rcf) to set the speed. It is equipped with a special button to easily change between rpm and rcf. For the centrifuges Minispin / Minispin plus a combination of buttons have to be pressed. Please refer to the devices Operating Manuals for more detailed information. What is the advantage of the automatic lid release of Eppendorf Microcentrifuges?

The automatic lid release is a feature of Eppendorf's air cooled Microcentrifuges. It can be switched On and Off via the centrifuges operating menu. If it is activated, the centrifuge lid opens automatically once the centrifugation run is finished. This allows quicker access to the samples and avoids possible heat build-up. In addition, the open lid is a clear signal - even from a distance - that the centrifugation run has ended. This function has not been implemented in the refrigerated microcentrifuges from Eppendorf, as a set temperature can be set there which should also be maintained after the end of a centrifuge run.

Does the lid latch have to be serviced or greased at regular intervals?

No, in order to ensure the full functionality of the lid latch, it must not be cleaned or greased. If you feel that this is nevertheless necessary, please contact our Technical Service. The contact address can be found in the operating manual of your centrifuge.

For what applications are aerosol-tight rotors important?

Aerosol-tight rotors are always recommended or even prescribed when working with hazardous or potentially hazardous substances. These can, for example, be viruses, pathogenic bacteria, potentially infectious blood samples or radioactive sample material.

What is the Short Spin function of Eppendorf Micro- and Multipurpose centrifuges?

The Short Spin function was developed to be able to perform a quick centrifuge run without having to set parameters. To start a short spin centrifugation, simply press the short key. How do I recognize aerosol-tight rotors?

Firstly, the aerosol-tight rotors can be recognized by their designation abbreviation “FA” or “AT”; secondly, Eppendorf has color-coded the aerosol-tight rotors. All aerosol-tight rotors have a red rotor lid screw, and a red ring is printed on to the rotor shaft.

Packaging disposal and recycling
In the lab, recycling is becoming more and more important every day. Remarkably, nearly all cardboard material is recycled in Europe. With this in mind, we have developed centrifuge packaging that consists of ca. 50 % recyclable cardboard material. We encourage all our customers to support the global sustainability initiative by collecting all cardboard packaging material and disposing of it in the appropriate collection container at their organization.
The packaging of our 5418R also contains other materials, including a wooden pallet, plastic dust cover made of LD-PE, and some foam parts. With the plastic dust cover and foam parts, we recommend selecting a dedicated recycling partner where PE material can be recycled. You can contact your local waste hauler or facility management team to understand the available recycling options for your organization.

Instrument disposal
Our Centrifuge 5418 R lasts for many years, but if it needs to be replaced, we kindly ask you to fulfill your local product disposal requirements. We strongly recommend a certified local recycling partner with experience in instruments with active cooling. Keeping it “local“ reduces the impact of transportation, and the "certified" aspect is recommended to ensure the safe and sustainable removal and recycling of the cooling liquids use in 5418R.

Decontamination
As microcentrifuges are often placed in lab environments and are used to handle biological samples, you should decontaminate Centrifuge 5418 R before disposal. For information on local decontamination requirements, contact your local biosafety officer and/ or waste officer. When disposing your centrifuge, you should also check if your local recycling partner has special instructions and/ or documentation requirements. The Eppendorf decontamination form sheet can be used as guidance for this.
