What is the UVette made of?

The UVette is made of a UV-transparent plastic.

Can the UVette be used in spectrophotometers of other manufacturers?

In general this is possible by using an adapter which we offer for light beam heights of 8.5, 10, 15 and 20 mm. Choose the adapter according to the height of the measuring beam in your spectrometer. Please contact therefore the manufacturer of your spectrometer directly or please ask your local Eppendorf office for assistance.

Can I reuse the UVette?

We recommend that the UVette be discarded following the sample measurement in order to guarantee contamination-free analysis. Cleaning processes and/or multiple use of an UVette may damage the quality of the optical surfaces, particularly in the sensitive UV-range. However, the UVette may be used up to five times for UV measurements if the Uvette material is not damaged during the cleaning procedures.

How to measure in the right way with the UVette?

As with quartz glass cuvettes, it is important to make certain that the UVette is placed in the same direction in the cuvette shaft for both the blank and the sample measurement. Because the self-absorbance values of the UVettes vary somewhat from one another, ideally, the same UVette should be used for both measurements. If changing the UVette when measuring a series of samples (recommendation: up to five measurements with one UVette) also the blank should be repeated using the new UVette.

Features

The Eppendorf UVette allows for measurements in the UV/Vis range with transparency from 220 nm to 1,600 nm with just a typical minimum volume of 50 µL. The UVette lets you choose between two optical path lengths (10 mm and 2 mm). The path length can be reduced by a factor of x5 without diluting or wasting any sample – simply by turning the UVette 90°.

Elevate your fluorescence assays

The UVette is suitable for fluorescence assays due to its low auto-fluorescence. The PCR-clean and protein-free individually sealed variant is ideal for accurate nucleic acid and protein quantification. The UVette can be used with the legacy Eppendorf BioPhotometer and Eppendorf BioSpectrometer families (these instruments are no longer available). These consumables can also be used in other spectrophotometers with the aid of an adapter.

Selection guide for Eppendorf photometers

One vessel - two path lengths

The unique shape of the UVette lets you measure samples using two different optical path lengths, which are clearly marked. By simply rotating the UVette by 90°, you can choose between the 10 mm and the 2 mm optical path lengths. If the sample concentration is too high when measuring using the 10 mm light path, rotate the UVette by 90° and repeat the measurement in the 2 mm light path.
On the other hand, if the sample concentration is lower than expected, you can easily switch from the 2 mm to the 10 mm light path. Thus the UVette provides great flexibility by covering measurements across a broad range of concentrations. Further information on the UVette can be found in our product brochure.

Smart design features enable accuracy even with low sample volumes

Our UVettes are manufactured from crystal clear plastic, which is UV/Vis transparent and features translucency between 220 nm and 1,600 nm. With the openly accessible side walls, you can visually check the liquid inside the UVette from all sides. This lets you detect air bubbles, for example, which may alter the test result. Furthermore, the funnel-shaped design of the UVette base prevents a capillary effect and ensures that even the minimum volume of 50 µL constantly remains centered in the measuring area.

Two packaging sizes and purity grades are available:

• The individually packaged UVettes are PCR–clean & protein–free and are the ideal choice for valuable samples. Samples can be recovered for downstream applications without the risk of degradation or contamination. Lot-specific certificates are available on the Eppendorf webpage.
• The routine pack contains UVettes with Eppendorf-certified quality and are well-suited for routine applications where many samples need to be screened. It offers safe storage in a reclosable box and convenient access to each UVette which makes filling easy.
For safe handling, cuvettes should be handled in combination with specific UVette holders.

Need safe and reliable UVette handling?

Due to their light weight and the small footprint, cuvettes tend to tip on the bench. To avoid losing high value samples due to these accidents, we recommend using a dedicated rack for cuvettes. These racks have special square-footed wells for the UVettes.
In addition to preventing spillages, storing your UVettes within dedicated racks also reduces the risk of mixing up your samples, improving your accuracy and efficiency.
