Off the Bench: the Eppendorf knowledge magazine

Since 2016, Off the Bench has been addressing researchers as well as a broad audience with an interest in science. Our knowledge magazine not only reports on a broad variety of topics from the world of science and research; it also introduces the people behind the science, their stories and perspectives.

Off the Bench is published online twice a year and can be subscribed to free of charge.

Off the Bench 02 I 2022

Whether it’s crises or conflicts – many things can impact the human psyche, all the way to serious illness. Psychological problems are on the rise worldwide. One good thing: a new openness about the subject helps break taboos, and those who strengthen their resilience are better prepared to withstand continuous stress. The dossier in this new issue of Off the Bench is dedicated to this topic which concerns us all. We will also learn that everyone can take steps to safeguard their psychological balance. In addition, readers of the Life-Science-Style magazine by Eppendorf can look forward to these topics: light pollution and bionics in robotics are discussed, as well as the personal happiness of a scientist, achieved through having discovered a possible cause for SIDS. There is also much to learn about Eppendorf itself: the success story behind its centrifuges, and how the company strategically manages to live sustainably across all relevant areas.

Diversity and inclusion are important – everyone agrees. However, actively living these concepts in one’s own surroundings, and within an organization, requires a cultural transformation. It is a topic that is close to our hearts at Eppendorf – and the reason why it adorns the cover of the latest issue of Off the Bench. Colorful, inviting, and promising lots of insights into the topic! In addition, readers of the Life-Science-Style magazine will, perhaps for the first time, discover the true nature of the scientific discipline “Ludology”. And why one day, we may live to 130 years of age – in the best of health. This trend is known as longevity. Eppendorf also reports on its project “Clean Water for Ghana”, as well as on why notebooks are obsolete when it comes to research data – thanks to digitalized products such as the Centrifuge 5910 Ri.

Planet Earth is threatened more than ever by greenhouse gas emissions, states the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Not news exactly; however, it does stress that action finally, and urgently, needs to be taken. The dossier of the latest issue of the Eppendorf Magazine “Off the Bench”, too, takes a conscious look at the need for leading a life in harmony with nature. It is not only the environment that will benefit – so will humans. After all, living surrounded by, and in harmony with, nature is proven to contribute to health and happiness! As well as featuring additional current LifeScience topics, this issue of “Off the Bench“ once again focuses on selected products and solutions by Eppendorf. Learn more about the Eppendorf pipettes which, for the past 60 years, have continually evolved, as well as about our latest innovations and services.

10 Issues of “Off the Bench” – Anniversary Issue!

In 2016, the first issue of this LifeScienceStyle magazine by Eppendorf was published – in English, and 28 pages in length. Today, “Off the Bench” comprises 52 pages and is also published in the German language. With the current issue – ants adorn the cover – the magazine celebrates its first notable anniversary! The ants represent the dossier topic of “community”: the continuing COVID-19 crisis once again illustrates the fact that we cannot succeed entirely by ourselves, and that we need each other. Community cohesion is emerging as the glue of our society. To those interested, the dossier also shows how the sense of community, which can suffer through work-from-home measures and other restrictions, may be strengthened. Intelligent software solutions are the focus of the section “Inside Eppendorf”: from simplification and digitization of pipetting processes to more efficient laboratory management – Eppendorf drives the connectivity of its products forward.

An empty toilet roll - in Germany at least, it symbolizes the lockdown period during the Corona crisis, as it was out of stock for weeks and months due to the "hoarding". It adorns the current issue of "Off the Bench" - Eppendorf's customer magazine. The title: "New Opportunities in the Crisis. Find out why perspectives can emerge from seemingly hopeless situations - and which challenges to our social coexistence must now be urgently addressed. Also: Laboratory scientists learn in the "Inside Eppendorf" section how pipetting around the work on SARS-CoV-2 is going well. And Eppendorf takes a close look at the environmental compatibility of consumables for the laboratory.

A thousand times a day we ask ourselves this question: Right or wrong? In times of unlimited possibilities, we have to decide. Our approach is not always entirely rational. Emotions tend to get involved. Simple rules of thumb can help us make the better choice. Outstanding scientific work is always also an expression of a functioning team. Only when everyone involved pulls together are groundbreaking findings possible that help us shape the future. Immunologist Andrea Ablasser, winner of the "Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators 2018", acknowledged exactly this: "I am very honored to receive this prestigious Eppendorf Award. It recognizes the contributions of several talented colleagues and students who have all participated in this long but exciting research effort," she said at the award ceremony in Heidelberg last June.

The British cell biologist Madeline Lancaster has developed a process that makes it possible to grow four-millimeter mini brains from cell cultures. The researcher and her team are passionately pursuing the question of what distinguishes us as humans from other living creatures.
In addition to three-dimensional brain research, Off the Bench is investigating how so-called superplants absorb toxins from the soil and process them to their own advantage. A research approach to rid contaminated soil of heavy metals? Plants are also what came to life in the California desert this spring after years of drought, transforming the otherwise barren landscape into a sea of color.

Spanish biochemist Oscar Fernandez-Capetillo is researching the connection between DNA damage, replicative cell stress and the development of cancer at the National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) in Madrid. In addition to a critical look at the genome editing technique CRISPR, the global extinction of red algae species, from which the gelling agent agar-agar is derived, is the topic of this issue. This time, we are guests in the Swiss metropolis of Geneva, where the ESHRE trade fair of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology will be held in early July.
