What is a bioreactor system?
A bioreactor system is used to grow cells or microorganisms under tightly controlled conditions to achieve optimum productivity, efficiency, and product quality. A bioreactor system consists of the following components:
- A cultivation vessel.
- Sensors that monitor critical process parameters inside the vessel.
- Control software that, among other things, displays and stores process parameters and controls actuators based on sensor readings to maintain parameters at setpoint.
- Actuators, such as pumps and motors, that are controlled by the control software to maintain critical process parameters at setpoint.

What are different types of bioreactor systems?
Bioreactor systems can differ in various aspects and therefore the choice of the right bioreactor system depends on your application. Bioreactor systems can differ in the following aspects, among others:
- The working volume range it supports.
- The number of bioreactors it can control. Some bioreactor systems are designed to control one cultivation vessel, while others can control multiple bioreactors in parallel. The latter is particularly useful for screening and Design of Experiment (DoE) applications during process development.
- The organism type it is suitable for. Some bioreactor systems are optimized for the cultivation of mammalian cells or microbes, respectively, while others are suitable for a wide range of cell types and organisms.
- Compatible vessel types: Glass and/or single-use, or stainless-steel vessels.
- Suitability for use in regulated environments.
