53.5 billion tons – that was the total global emissions, in CO2 equivalents, in 2017, as reported in the UN Environment Emissions Gap Report 2018. This enormous amount of greenhouse gas comes from energy production, industry, and land-use change, and it is continuing to negatively affect the world’s climate. Cutting down greenhouse gas emissions to reverse global warming is one of our most challenging goals for the near future.
