Monoclonal antibodies are genetically engineered molecules that are designed to act as substitute antibodies and restore, improve, alter, or mimic the immune system's defense against undesirable cells, such as cancer cells. Originally, for monoclonal antibody production mAb-producing cells (hybridomas) were generated by fusing immortal myeloma cells with antibody-producing B cells. Today, Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells are often used as an expression system.
