Is the Varispenser resistant to morpholine (tetrahydro-1,4-oxazine)?

Yes. Due to the hygroscopic properties of morpholine, please use the drying tube (4960 851.00). The drying tube should be filled with dried calcium carbonate.

Is it possible to dispense crude oil using Varispenser?

The Varispenser is chemically resistant to crude oil. Difficulties may be caused by the viscosity, depending on the composition and temperature of the crude oil. The Varispenser is intended for dispensing liquids with a maximum kinematic viscosity of 500 mm2/s . It is thus necessary to work extremely slowly, and more effort is required on the part of the user. Furthermore blockage of the Varispenser hoses and valves is observed very fast, thus an immediate cleaning is necessary.

Can the Varispenser be used to dispense methyl butyl ether?

Yes, the Varispenser can be used for this. Methyl butyl ether is highly flammable! Warning: follow safety information!

Can the Varispenser be used to dispense dibutylamine?

Dibutylamine is very similar to ammonia. The Varispenser is resistant to dibutylamine.

Can 0.1 n butylamine and ethyl acetate be used in the Varispenser?

Both 0,1 N butylamine and ethyl acetate were tested and can be used.

During the dispensing process, does the liquid come into contact with any metal components of the Varispenser?

Yes. The spring system of the spring-loaded platinum-iridium valve ball comes into contact with the liquid during dispensing.

I would like to distribute liquid agar onto petri dishes with the Varispenser. How hot can the agar be for this?

Varispensers are measurement devices for which the guaranteed accuracy, precision or error limits only apply in a restricted temperature range of 15 - 40 °C (conforming to DIN 12650). Applications with liquids outside this temperature range are not recoommended and can only be carried out at the user's own risk. At higher temperatures up to 60 °C the plastic materials fluorocarbon and polypropylene will be fully chemically resistant, but mechanically they will become slightly softer. When hot agar is aspirated out of the bottle, cooling will take place in the cold Varispenser. Since agar becomes much firmer at ca. 35 °C, blockage can easily occur. In any case immediate cleaning will be required, in particular of the valve.

Is it possible to use the Varispenser to dispense agarose gels at approx. 90 °C?

Varispensers are measurement devices for which the guaranteed accuracy, precision or error limits only apply in a restricted temperature range of 15 - 40 °C (conforming to DIN 12650). Heating the device to 90°C is not permitted and can only be carried out at the user's own risk.

Is it possible to autoclave the Varispenser attached to a full flask?

Yes, this is possible. Please mind the following precautions: The Varispenser is loosely screwed on the bottle, the volume setting knob is set to 20% of the nominal volume and the piston is completely pulled out.

Is it possible to autoclave the Varispenser 2(x) attached to a bottle?

No, it is not possible to autoclave the Varispenser 2/x attached to a bottle. The device must be placed horizontal on a cloth in the autoclave (according to operating manual chapter 5.9).

Is it possible to exchange the dispensing tube of the Varispenser 2 and 2x among each other?

Yes, it is possible to exchange the dispensing tube of the Varispenser 2 with a dispensing tube of the Varispenser 2x. Please note that the device is then capable of recirculating the liquid back into the bottle.

Do aspiration tubes of different lengths exist for Varispenser 2(x)?

Yes, aspiration tubes of different lengths are available to cover most bottle types.

Does the aspiration tube of the Varispenser 2(x) need to be cut diagonal for aspiration?

No, the aspiration tube of Varispenser 2(x) does not need to be cut diagonal, because two holes on the bottom side of the tube enable liquid uptake.

What is the "flexible discharge tube" used for?

The "flexible discharge tube" can be used to reach into small or narrow-standing tubes without tilting the botlle. More Information are available in the White Paper 38 .

For which liquids a drying tube is beneficial?

The drying tube should be used when working with fuming acids to avoid dilution. It can tehn be filled with e.g., calcium chloride or silica pills. When working with alkaline solutions filling of the drying tube with sodium hydroxide pills prevents carbonate formation and crystallization of the liquid. More Information are available in the White Paper 38 .

Is it possible to dispense sterile medium with the Varispenser 2(x)?

Yes, it is possible to dispense sterile medium with the Varispenser 2(x). We recommend the usage of a sterile filter at the back of the device to keep the sterility of the medium. More Information are available in the White Paper 38 .

Is it possible to adjust the Varispenser 2(x)?

Yes, it is possible to adjust the Varispenser 2(x) for liquids with different properties than water. Please refer to the operating manual for further information.

How can the Varispenser 2(x) be decontaminated?

The outer of the Varispenser 2/x can be wiped with lint-free tissue and 70 % ethanol. When sterilization of the inner parts is needed, the Varispenser 2/x can be autoclaved. The dispenser does not need to be dissembled for autoclaving, but it must be placed horizontal on a cloth in the autoclave (according to operating manual chapter 5.9).

Is the Varispenser 2/2x suited for dispensing 100% acetic acid (glacial acetic acid)?

Yes. 100% acetic acid can be dispensed with the Varispenser 2/2x. When using concentrated acids the usage of a drying tube is furthermore highly recommended. More information about the chemical resistance of the Varispenser 2/2x is available here .

Can the Varispenser 2/2x be used to dispense a conc. sulfuric acid which contains potassium bichromate and silver sulfate?

Yes, you can use the Varispenser 2/2x for this application. Please notice, when using concentrated acids a drying tube should be connected to the Varispenser. More information about the chemical resistance of the Varispenser 2/2x is available here .

Which physical limits does the Varispenser 2/2x has?

The device is intended for dispensing liquids with following properties: ambient temperature 15°C - 40°C , maximum density: 2.2 g/cm3, maximum vapor pressure: 500 mbar. Above 300 mbar slow aspiration is recommended to avoid boiling., kinematic viscosity: 500 mm2/s. More details are written in the operating manual .

I bought a new Varispenser 2(x) and drops are visible inside the device. Additionally an intense smell was present when opening the cardbox. What is that?

Each Varispenser 2(x) is calibrated before packaging using distilled water. Afterwards each device is rinsed with an ethanol-glycerol solution to dry faster. The drops inside the device and the smell occur from this solution. The device should be completely dry after a few minutes outside the packaging.
