How can the precision of a pipetting device be checked in real time and even alert users to errors during pipetting? This question drives Simon zum Felde, a project manager at Eppendorf. Together with Marcel von Lehe, a talented master's student, he is working on a project that could not only revolutionize laboratory work but also change the way we think about precision and technology. Their collaboration demonstrates how pioneering solutions can emerge from creative ideas and technical expertise.
Simon, what led you to Eppendorf and what role do you play in the company?
Simon: Sure. I'm Simon zum Felde, 32 years old, and I work at Eppendorf in the Technology and Innovation department in R&D at Eppendorf Liquid Handling GmbH in Hamburg, Germany. I originally come from an AI startup where I optimized industrial processes through customized AI and automation solutions. In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, I decided to join Eppendorf to contribute to fighting the virus. I started as a project manager in R&D and led the "Connected Pipette" project. Today, I focus on very early scientific technologies and lead several feasibility studies to make our products even more innovative and secure competitive advantages through patents.
What excites you most about your work at Eppendorf?
Simon: The opportunity to work at the forefront of technological innovation and actively shape the future of laboratory and biotechnology is incredibly exciting. The work combines creativity, strategic thinking, and technical excellence – exactly what drives me. I particularly appreciate the interdisciplinary exchange with experts, which continually sharpens my analytical, technical, and strategic skills.
Marcel, you have worked with Simon on an exciting project. Can you tell us more about it?
Marcel: Of course! Together with Simon, I worked on a master's thesis that involves developing an AI-based method for verifying pipetting results. This method could revolutionize how laboratory results are checked. The challenge was to develop an algorithm that checks the accuracy and correctness of pipetting in real time. Collaboration with Simon was crucial, as we perfectly complemented each other's technical and strategic skills. It was especially exciting to analyze the data streams and train the algorithm based on live data to achieve precise results.
How important is collaboration with universities and student workers for your innovation projects?
Simon: Collaboration with universities and student workers is essential for our innovation process. Students bring fresh perspectives and new scientific methods that enrich our projects. Currently, there are some feasibility studies underway, where we work closely with universities. These collaborations allow us to transfer current scientific insights into the industry and develop innovative solutions. The close exchange with universities also ensures access to the latest technologies and knowledge.
Marcel and I plan to continue our scientific collaboration as part of his dissertation, which could lead to further technological advancements for Eppendorf.
What defines the spirit of innovation at Eppendorf for you?
Simon: Innovation at Eppendorf means combining technological advancements with clear practical benefits for scientists and researchers. We continuously question existing processes and develop new technologies that ease the daily work of our customers and increase the efficiency of research and production processes. This culture of innovation is characterized by a strong combination of technological progress and a clear focus on the needs of our customers.
What tips do you have for new colleagues starting in the Liquid Handling department at Eppendorf?
Simon: I recommend getting thoroughly familiar with our products and technologies, always asking questions, and learning from experienced colleagues. Practical experience is crucial, as is innovative thinking. Teamwork and taking responsibility are also important aspects to grow quickly and contribute effectively. At Eppendorf, we value courage, curiosity, openness, perseverance, and collaboration – values that help us continuously improve.
